Why buy coffee beans here instead of from one roaster?

Every New Zealand roaster has a few great coffees. Finding the right one means visiting a dozen websites. We put them in one place.

Many roasters, one place

Browse independent roasters from around the country without hopping between sites, accounts and checkouts.

Sent by the roaster

We don't hold stock. Your coffee comes from the roaster who made it, packed and sent by them.

Matched to your taste

How much do coffee beans cost in NZ?

Across our 19 coffees, the smallest bag of most coffees costs between $13.50 and $17.00, and the cheapest starts at $11.00. Larger bag sizes go up to $66.00. Bag sizes vary by roaster and coffee, so check the size on each coffee's page when you compare prices.

Shipping is charged per roaster at a flat national rate, shown before you pay. If you order from two roasters you pay each one's shipping, so choosing several bags from the same roaster keeps the total down.

Choosing coffee beans in New Zealand

New Zealand has a strong specialty coffee scene, with independent roasters in nearly every region. The best coffee beans for you depend on three things: how you brew, how you like it to taste, and how fresh it is when it reaches you.

Brew method. Espresso, plunger, pour-over and filter machines all behave differently. Roasters often say which brew method a coffee suits, and the quiz uses your method to narrow the choice.

Taste. Look at the tasting notes and roast level. Chocolate and caramel notes suggest a balanced, easy cup. Citrus and floral notes suggest something brighter. Smoky and bold suggests a darker roast.

Freshness. Buying direct from the roaster means your coffee hasn't spent months in a warehouse. Whole beans keep their flavour longer than ground.

Coffee beans NZ: your questions

Where can I buy coffee beans in NZ?

You can buy coffee beans straight from independent New Zealand roasters on Bean Merchant. We bring 9 independent NZ roasters together on one site, so you can compare their coffees side by side and order from several roasters in a single checkout.

How do I choose the right coffee beans?

Start with how you brew and how you like your coffee to taste. Lighter roasts tend to be brighter and fruitier, medium roasts balanced and chocolatey, and darker roasts bolder and smokier. Our coffee quiz asks a few quick questions and matches you to coffees from our roasters.

Should I buy whole beans or ground coffee?

Whole beans hold their flavour longer, so grind just before brewing if you can. If you don't have a grinder, choose a grind that suits your brewer on the product page.

How much does shipping cost?

Each roaster ships their own coffee direct to you and sets a flat national shipping rate. The rate is shown before you pay. If you order from two roasters, you pay each roaster's shipping.

Can I order from more than one roaster at once?

Yes. Add coffees from any of our roasters to one cart and check out once. Each roaster packs and sends their own part, so parcels can arrive on different days.

Can I get coffee beans on subscription?

Yes. Choose a coffee subscription and your deliveries can rotate through roasters matched to your taste. You can skip a delivery or cancel any time from your account.

How long do coffee beans stay fresh?

Coffee tastes its best in the first few weeks after roasting. Keep the bag sealed, away from light, heat and moisture, and buy about as much as you will finish in a few weeks. Whole beans stay fresh longer than ground coffee.

What is the difference between a blend and a single origin?

A single origin comes from one place, so it shows off that region's character. A blend combines coffees from different places, often to make a balanced, consistent cup. Neither is better; it depends on what you like.

Who roasts the coffee?

Independent New Zealand roasters. Bean Merchant doesn't roast or hold stock: every coffee page shows which roaster made it, and your order is sent by that roaster.
